OEIAC

Who we are

The Observatory for Ethics in Artificial Intelligence of Catalonia (OEIAC), which takes the form of a Chair at the University of Girona, and is part of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy promoted by the Government of Catalonia under the name CATALONIA. AI.

CATALONIA. AI includes an axis on “Ethics and Society”, which is where the IEOAC is located, in order to promote the development of an ethical AI, which respects the current legality, which is compatible with our social and cultural norms, and which is centred on people.

You can find more information about the OEIAC on the website of the University of Girona and about the CATALONIA. AI Strategy on its website.

Ethical principles

The assessment through this checklist, which integrates current legislation on data and AI, together with recommendations from various bodies, is designed to provide a framework for ethical assessment through seven basic principles:

  1. Transparency and explainability, to ensure clarity of AI operations and decision-making, making them understandable to users and stakeholders.
  2. Justice and fairness, to prevent bias and ensure fair treatment and equitable outcomes for all users of AI systems.
  3. Safety and non-maleficence, to prevent potential harm to users and society at large from unethical or irresponsible development or use of AI.
  4. Responsibility and accountability, to establish clear guidelines on accountability for actions and decisions surrounding AI systems and to ensure responsible development and deployment.
  5. Privacy, to prioritise the protection of personal and sensitive data, respecting privacy and confidentiality, especially of users.
  6. Autonomy, to protect and promote human agency in contexts of automation through AI, allowing for ever more meaningful control by people over AI systems.
  7. Sustainability, to protect the environment and take into account the ecological and social impacts of AI, promoting sustainable practices and long-term viability.
